The City of Newcastle’s men’s team earned their place in the England Golf Champion Club event after winning the Northumberland Union of Golf Clubs’ Teams Championship at Bedlingtonshire.
The team of Andrew Minnikin (72-68), Phil Ridden (67-71) and Will Handyside (84-78) combined for a two over-par total and a four-shot win over Hexham’s Daniel Twizell, Lewis Slilverd and Junior Dobson. Meanwhile, Phil and The Northumberland’s Harrison Sewell led the individual scoring with eight under-par totals.
In the second division, played over 18 holes, Bedlingtonshire topped the leaderboard with a seven over-par total and earned promotion to the first division for next year’s event alongside Gosforth, Bellingham and Goswick.
City of Newcastle will go on to represent Northumberland in the England Golf Champion Club event in Derbyshire in September – an event the club won in 2017 and 2019 before going on to win the European clubs’ title in 2019.
