City of Newcastle heading back to national final

The City of Newcastle’s men’s team will represent Northumberland in the England Golf Champion Club event later this year after leading the county qualifier at Newbiggin.

The team of Zak Laws, Andrew Minnikin and Phil Ridden won the 36-hole division one title with a six-round score of 455.

City of Newcastle will compete at Stanton on the Wolds Golf Club September 21-22. The club won the event in 2019, and went on to be crowned European champions later that year.

In the individual event at Newbiggin, Hexham’s Sean Heads led the field with a two over-par total of 146, as Newbiggin’s Craig Penny finished second.

In the second division, played over 18 holes, Slaley Hall’s Brandon Bailey, Josh Brookes and Richie Lawson led the way – with Richie winning the individual trophy with a one over-par round of 73.

Slaley won promotion to division one for 2025 along with Ponteland, Warkworth and Magdalene Fields – as Whitley Bay, Prudhoe, Arcot Hall and Newcastle United were relegated to division two for next season’s event.
