Charlotte Naughton wins English Schools title

Ponteland’s Charlotte Naughton added a second national title to her growing golf résumé with victory in the English Schools Golf Association National Under 16 Girls’ Championship at Coventry Hearsall Golf Club.

Charlotte, a two-time Northumberland county champion, shot rounds of 77 and 74 in windy conditions to beat Nottinghamshire-based Elizabeth Wilson on countback.

“It’s a good feeling to be a national champions again,” said Charlotte, who won the English Girls’ Under 14 Open Championship in 2022. “Winning big tournaments is a great highlight, and makes all the hard work worth it.

“Coventry Hearsall was such a tight course, so playing cautiously and not making big mistakes was important. I played really well, though my putting wasn’t as strong as it has been, and I just focussed on shooting the best score I could in the conditions. Winning, and qualifying to represent England Schools later this summer, is a great feeling.

“My season is going really well so far,” added Charlotte. “I’ve got a lot of confidence heading into the summer holidays and all the biggest national events. I’ve got my first English Girls’ Under 16 Open, which will be really fun as I move up to the next age category there for the first time. I’m also looking forward to The R&A Girls, which goes into matchplay. Making the cut there is a big goal this season.”
