England international Alex Boyes has set his sights on a successful summer at home and overseas after committing to playing college golf in the US in 2027
Alex Boyes has set his sights on success on the national and international stages this summer as he looks ahead to joining the University of California, Berkeley in the autumn of 2027.
Alex, 17, added more top individual finishes to his growing golf CV in 2025 – including a runner-up finish in the North of England U16 Championship, and a T3 finish in the Fairhaven Trophy. He was also part of the England team that won the Girls’ & Boys’ Home Internationals – going undefeated and winning 5.5 out of a possible six points to add to his list of achievements for the national team.
“2025 was a very up and down year – with some big highs and some low points,” said Alex (pictured right), who is now based at Cleveland Golf Club. “I made some big swing changes last winter with my coach and the work continued during the 2025 season. There was some good golf in there, but at times it was a bit of a battle. It’s never great when you don’t have the ball under control and the consistency wasn’t where I wanted it to be.
“That said, the highs last season were great. Winning the Home Internationals with England – and going unbeaten – was brilliant. I also shot 19 under-par in the North of England U16s at Pannal to finish second. The head-to-head with [winner] Albie [Beeston] was a cool experience.”
Having spent the winter honing his swing changes, Alex is looking for a consistent 2026.
“I’ve done a lot of hard work on my swing, so I would like to see the results of that out on the golf course,” said Alex. “Consistency is the goal, but a win or two would be nice.
“I’m also keen to continue representing England at home and overseas. Having missed out on being part of the team for the European Boys last season, I’d love to be part of that in 2026. Being picked for the Great Britain & Ireland team for the Jacques Léglise Trophy is also one of my goals. I’ll be part of the training camp in Ireland and I know I need strong, consistent results to make my case for selection.
“On the individual side, there is a lot of top-level golf to play at boys’ level. The Carris Trophy; French, Spanish and British boys are all really important events which I’d like to play well in. The English U18s is pretty close to home at Sand Moor, so that’s on my radar. There are also the national men’s events on my schedule, and strong performances in those would be great to add to my CV as I progress.”
Looking further ahead, Alex has committed to joining the Berkeley men’s golf team in the autumn of 2027. The programme has produced several PGA Tour winners including James Hahn, Max Homa, and 2020 PGA Championship winner and 2021 Open champion Collin Morikawa.
“I’m very excited to be a college golfer,” added Alex. “The recruiting process is long and can be stressful as it’s a big decision. From the start, I wanted to go to Berkeley and it’s great to have the chance to go to my dream school. I know I’m going to get a great education while following in the footsteps of players like Collin Morikawa.
“I was inspired by Berkeley’s reputation for athletics and academics at first. Then I got to speak to some of the coaches, saw their facilities, and got really excited about being part of the team. I’m planning to visit in September, when I’ll get to meet some of the players and the coaches in person. I’ll also get my first taste of college life in California.”
As he continues his golf journey, Alex is keen to play as much golf as possible while also completing his A Levels.
“I want to play as much as I can, at home and in Europe, and it would be amazing to find support to make the most of every opportunity.
“The more I can play, the more I’ll learn and develop as I look towards the transition to college golf. I want to give myself the best opportunity to be ready for that and a little help would be amazing if anyone out there is looking to support a young player.”
