Yorkshire will represent the north in the English Men’s County Finals after winning the Northern Counties Golf Union Men’s County Qualifying (AKA The Big Six) at The Northumberland Golf Club.
The Yorkshire team – Lucas Martin (72-70), Dan Norman (72-75), Habib Khan (73-70), Jake Wallis (73-69), Jake Sowden (74-77) and Max Reynolds (75-70) – led the field with a six over-par team total. They will go on to represent the north in the national finals at Hollinwell on September 25-27.
“It’s great to have our hands back on the trophy for the first time since 2023,” said Yorkshire captain David Appleyard. “Winning this event is really important to us as a team and as a county, and it’s something we put a plan in place to achieve at the start of every season.
“We put together an outstanding team performance across the 12 rounds at The Northumberland. I’m incredibly proud of all the players, and Matt Dolling our travelling reserve, and this was a real team effort from the players, our coach Gareth Davies on-site with us, and the whole Yorkshire team which supports us at every event.
“Finishing six over-par in very windy conditions for 12 rounds of golf is a tremendous achievement and all the players should be very proud of themselves.
“We can’t wait to compete in the County Finals again. It’s a different format [round-robin matchplay with foursomes and singles each day] but it’s one we’ve done well in before and we’ll put the work in to hopefully bring the trophy back to the north.”
Meanwhile, defending champions Lancashire finished second with a team total of 12 over-par, while Durham finished third on 29 over-par in the 36-hole, six-player event in which all six scores from both rounds count towards the team total.
In the individual standings, Durham’s Jack Richardson (71-69) took home the trophy as four players – including Jamie Birkbeck (Durham), Ian Kenwright (Lancashire) and Luke Kelly (Lancashire) – shot four under-par scores.
