Special focus – Welcome inn

A traditional Cumbrian inn just seconds from the A66 – The Pheasant Inn is a great location to explore the Lake District from, including its golf courses

Home to spectacular landscapes, it’s no surprise Cumbria has so many stunning locations for golf courses. While the coastline is renowned, inland you’ll find courses with spectacular backdrops of lakes and mountains.

Set on Threlkeld Common, the views from Keswick Golf Club include Blencathra, Skiddaw and Clough Head while the tree-lined fairways and well-protected greens present a stern test. Meanwhile, the James Braid-designed course at Cockermouth Golf Club is well worth a visit for its moorland layout, which sits high above the surrounding landscape with views of Skiddaw and the Lorton Fells – and across to the south of Scotland and the Isle of Man on a clear day.

For those staying over, The Pheasant Inn is a stone’s throw from Bassenthwaite Lake and the A66. A charming 17th Century coaching inn, it was renovated by The Inn Collection Group in 2021 and retains all of the charm acquired over hundreds of years.

You’ll find plenty cosy corners to settle down in here – perfect for sharing stories of your day on the course. On warm evenings, the garden is sheltered by tall trees and provides a picturesque location to unwind in the evening sunshine.

For those returning from the course, pub classics featuring fresh Cumbrian produce headline the menu. On our visit, the game burger was fantastic, as was the seared venison steak with tomato, rocket and blue cheese salad, and chunky chips.

Breakfast meanwhile is hearty and served from 7.30am daily for those heading to the course early in the morning.

You’ll find 26 spacious en-suite rooms within the inn and its cottage – each with easy access to the free on-site car park, meaning there’s never too far to carry your bags. There’s also free wi-fi to share pictures and stories from your rounds.

The Pheasant Inn is just five minutes’ drive from Cockermouth Golf Club, and 15 minutes from Keswick Golf Club. From those travelling to the west coast, the inn is less than 40 minutes’ drive from Silloth on Solway Golf Club.

For those combining golf with a visit to the Lake District, or travelling with non-golfers, the inn sits beneath Sale fell and the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake are within a couple of minutes’ walk. Guests can also enjoy access to the nearby Armathwaite Hall with its swimming pool, spa and fitness centre for just £15 per adult.

Dinner, bed and breakfast packages start from £99 per person. Golf Inn Getways are also available for groups of four or more.
