Slaley Hall hosted its most successful captain’s charity day to-date this summer, raising £26,740 for Teenage Cancer Trust and Tynedale Hospice at Home.
The event on Friday July 17 was led by club captain Ian Curry and brought together 96 golfers, local businesses, sponsors, members, friends and volunteers for a full day of golf, entertainment and fundraising.
Having set an ambitious target of £20,000, the generosity shown before, during and after the event saw the final total exceed that target by £6,740 – surpassing events at the resort since 1997, with the previous record standing at £22,500 since 2001/2.
Ian said: “When we set ourselves a target of £20,000, I knew it was ambitious, but the support we received completely exceeded our expectations.
“To have raised £26,740 for two incredible charities is something I’m immensely proud of. Finding out that we’ve also achieved the highest total since records began makes it even more special. It came from an incredible collective effort by our members, golfers, sponsors, local businesses, friends, volunteers and everyone who bought a raffle ticket, donated a prize or placed an auction bid. I can’t thank everyone enough for getting behind us.”
The day featured a team golf competition alongside a host of additional fundraising challenges, followed by an evening of entertainment, a charity raffle featuring more than 40 donated prizes, and a live auction offering more than 30 lots. Auction prizes ranged from golf experiences and hospitality packages to dining experiences and signed sporting memorabilia.
Funds raised will be shared between Ian’s two chosen charities – Teenage Cancer Trust, which provides specialist care and support for young people with cancer across the UK, and Tynedale Hospice at Home, which provides vital palliative care and support to people and families within the local community.
Ian, managing director of Gateshead-based Apex Radio Systems, which also supported the event as a sponsor, added: “Both charities do extraordinary work, and ultimately that’s what the whole day was about. There were plenty of laughs, some competitive golf, and a fantastic evening, but knowing that it has resulted in £26,740 being raised to support people and families who need it is what makes the achievement worthwhile.
“The generosity we’ve experienced has been incredible. Every time we asked for support, someone stepped forward – whether that was sponsoring the day, donating an auction lot or raffle prize, buying tickets or simply giving their time. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone involved and very proud of what we’ve achieved together.”
