Rhys Thompson ready for a new challenge

After a long off-season of preparations, Rhys Thompson is ready to get his first year as a Challenge Tour player underway.

Slaley Hall-attached Rhys – who topped the Tartan Tour order of merit in 2023, winning four times to earn the full Challenge Tour card which was up for grabs – flew to South Africa for the opening swing of the season in February.

“I’m so excited to get started,” he said on the eve of his first event as a full member of the Challenge Tour. “Having had a quick turnaround after getting into the first event from the reserve list, I’ve loved soaking up as much as I can on the range and golf course.

“I’m really looking forward to getting going – hopefully I can take some of my game from last year into the start of this season. From there, let’s see what happens.”

The 2024 Challenge Tour schedule begins with four back-to-back events in South Africa, before players head to India for two events. Rhys will be hoping to build on what proved to be a breakout year in 2023, during which we enjoyed Tartan Tour success, won in Portugal, and made his first appearances on both the Asian and Challenge tours.

“I’ve had a good off-season and done some good work,” he added. “A lot of that has been indoors given the weather at home, but I’ve tried my best to get outside and stay sharp. A trip to Portugal for three events in January also helped a lot, and I’m just raring to get the season underway.”
