Practice makes perfect

Dean Bailey visits Tyneside Golf Centre and finds the perfect place to sharpen your game

The key to improving your scores is often built around improving your shots from inside 100 yards and now the members of Tyneside Golf Club, and golfers and members of the public in the local area, have the perfect place to do that.

Tyneside Golf Centre, developed with the help of an Inspired Facilities grant from Sport England, has opened on the club’s former practice ground bordering the second fairway. A six-hole par three course, short game practice area with bunkers, a large green and a short range, and two long game practice areas have been created as part of the £80,000 project which has taken a year to complete.

The facility is open to the public, as well as Tyneside members, with the six par threes maintained to the same high standard as the Harry Colt-designed course, with holes ranging from 80-147 yards.

Ron Stewart, a member of the club’s committee and the man who had led the work on the project, says: “The facility is so far from the two practice fields we had and the adjoining field we used to rent for farming. The work put in by our green staff and contractor Maughan & Co has been incredible over the last 12 months and to see the facility open to the public is fantastic.

“We want to give people the chance to practice their golf, but we also to introduce people to the game, let them play a small course at their own pace and get into it before heading out onto the golf course,” adds Ron.

Designed with the help of Frank Pont, the golf course architect advising on a five-year programme of work on the Colt-designed course at Tyneside, and the club’s professional Gary Vickers, the par three course has a links feel with fantastic views across the Tyne Valley.

The facility is open to the public with a 12-month season ticket available for £50 (£25 juniors and £100 families). Visitors can also pay for the day – £4 adults and £2 juniors at the pro shop.
