New course and putting green now open at Matfen Hall

Northumberland country hotel, spa and golf estate Matfen Hall has welcomed players to its new 18-hole championship course and Himalayas putting green for the first time.

Club members and guests took to The Douglas Course for a special event to mark the opening of the first stage of a multi-million pound redevelopment of the golf offering at Maften Hall.

Following several months of work, The Douglas is home to nine newly designed and expertly constructed green complexes. Combing the former Douglas and Standing Stone loops of nine, the new 18-hole layout features drystone walls, the River Pont, and some of Northumberland’s finest countryside. The nine-hole Dewlaw loop at Matfen Hall remains the same.

The Himalayas – Matfen Hall’s 18-hole putting course located near to the country house – is also now open.

The launch of The Himalayas and The Douglas Course marks the first milestone in the full refurbishment of the estate’s golf facilities. Later this summer, The Academy – featuring a 15-bay driving range with Toptracer technology and a Power Tee system along with an all-weather 18-hole putting course – will open.

James Huntly, head of marketing at Matfen Hall country hotel, spa and golf estate, said: “What a fantastic opening weekend with wonderful weather and a great mix of guests and visitors joining us across the two days.

“On Saturday we opened with The Douglas’ first invitational, which was very popular, and then on Sunday we had a bit of family fun as The Himalayas welcomed its first guests.

“Both are now fully open and we’ve just got a bit more work to complete before we can open The Academy and the rest of the estate. We expect this to be ready within a couple of months and to be welcoming our first guests before the summer is out.”
