Matfen Hall launches The Golf Academy at the Northumberland resort

Matfen Hall has officially opened The Golf Academy, completing the multi-million-pound development of its golf offering.

The Golf Academy brings together a new driving range and practice facilities designed for golfers of all abilities.

At the heart of the facility is the new floodlit range, which is home to 15 covered bays with Toptracer and Power Tee technology. The Swing Suite, a private bay for groups of up to eight guests, has its own TV and Toptracer technology. The outfield has been designed by James Edwards, who also oversaw the changes to The Douglas course at Matfen, and it features multiple target greens which were created following a massive earthmoving project. The range building, which is also home to a café and retail space, was designed by North East-based PJC Architecture.

The Academy also includes a new short game practice area and Mini Matfen – an all-weather 18-hole putting course.

The Academy expands the teaching and custom fitting opportunities at Matfen, adding to The Golf Lab in The Keepers clubhouse, which is home to a Foresight GCHawk overhead-mounted launch monitor, Foresight GCQuad launch monitor, and PuttView augmented reality technology.

The golf offering at Matfen also includes the reimagined Douglas course, the Himalayas putting green, and the par three course.

The new and improved facilities for golfers are part of the Northumberland resort’s £50million transformation over the last six years – which has seen it become Northumberland’s only five-star hotel, with 63 rooms and suites, the Emerald fine-dining restaurant, the Cloisters Restaurant and Bar, and the Aurelius Spa.

James O’Donnell, head of commercial development of Matfen Hall said: “Six years ago, we set out to transform Matfen Hall into one of the UK’s leading country house hotels whilst retaining its elegance and history.

“We have taken an architecturally beautiful building and breathed new life into it, creating excellent facilities and an enhanced guest experience. We are incredibly proud of the new offering, and we look forward to welcoming guests to experience the estate in its new chapter.”
