Lincolnshire won the 2025 Senior Men’s County Finals for the first time in the competition’s 20-year history at Harrogate Golf Club.
On a dramatic day where all four sides went into the day level on match points, Cheshire beat Cornwall 5.5-3.5, while Lincolnshire and Sussex battled out a nail-biter. With both teams requiring 3.5 points from their six singles matches to win the title, Lincolnshire had to dig deep against Sussex in the final three matches – and 67-year-old captain Richard Latham delivered the crucial point to ensure they’d lift the trophy after their narrow miss in 2024.
Reflecting on the week, Harrogate men’s captain John Shepherd said: “Hosting the England Golf Senior Men’s County Finals was a huge honour for Harrogate Golf Club. We’re not used to staging an event of this scale, but with fantastic support from England Golf, the week was a real success. I’m immensely proud of everyone involved – from our greens team led by Richard MacKenzie and Ken Ward, who presented the course so beautifully despite the challenges of Storm Amy; to Clare, Steve and the catering team who kept everyone so well looked after throughout the week.
“A special mention also to Joanne and Francesca, whose planning and coordination behind the scenes were central to the smooth running of the event, and to our volunteers – their enthusiasm and generosity of time made such a difference to the experience for players and visitors alike.
“The standard of golf was exceptional, but equally memorable was the camaraderie and spirit shown by every team. It was a real pleasure to host such a special event.”
