James reigns at Ramside

James Glenn produced a record-breaking performance to win the Northern Golfer Men’s Champion of Champions title at Ramside Hall.

James, representing Bishop Auckland Golf Club, posted a one under-par round of 71 on the Cathedral Course to lead the elite field of club champions from clubs across the North East, Cumbria and Yorkshire, and break the course record from the blue tees by one.

He said: “I’m very proud to have been able to get the job done on a tough golf course and be named the Champion of Champions.

“The Cathedral Course is a tough test and you have to respect it. I played patiently, tried to limit my mental errors as much as possible and take the birdie opportunities when they came.”

James posted birdies at the first and second holes to get off to a fast start before making bogey at the par five 11th to drop back to one under-par. He got back to two under-par with a birdie at the 16th before handing that shot back at 17 with an error from the tee. A regulation par on the par three 18th sealed the win and a place among some of the North East’s best golfers stretching back to 1968.

“Winning capped off the best season I’ve ever had,” added James.

“Since then I’ve had time to reflect, set some new goals for 2019 including a run at the EuroPro Tour, and I’m excited to play university golf before heading into the 2019 season.”

This year’s Champions of Champions events, which included Ladies and Junior events won by Gosforth Park Ladies’ Jess Baker and Whitley Bay’s Rosie Belsham respectively, were supported for a second year by Ramside Hall and hosted over the Prince Bishops and Cathedral courses at the Co Durham resort.

Ramside Hall director of golf Helen Roseberry said: “The whole Ramside team would like to congratulate James, Jess and Rosie on being crowned the champions of champions for 2018 having come through some of the strongest fields assembled in the region this season.

“These events are real highlights in our busy calendar at Ramside Hall and we’re proud to team up with Northern Golfer to welcome so many of our region’s best golfers to Ramside and test them over our two courses, both of which were beautifully presented again this year by Roger Shaw and his team.

“We look forward to welcoming this year’s champions back to Ramside in 2019 along with many more of the region’s best juniors, men and women golfers.”

The dates for the 2019 Champion of Champions events will be announced in the New Year. For full results from the 2018 events go to www.northerngolfer.co.uk/champion-of-champions-2018
