How we setup to the golf ball dictates so much of the outcome of each swing – from our strike to the startline, flight and ultimately where the golf ball finishes.
The key to setting up for success is consistency. Even the best players in the world have elements in their setup which aren’t perfect, and they drill these tens of thousands of times to ensure they are where they need to be.
In the example here, I’m showing how a player could have a consistent position with their lower half, but then rotate their shoulders down and left, which will lead to an over the top move in the downswing.
The key element here is finding a routine which gets you in the same position every time you address the ball.
It’s important to note that every player’s setup is unique, and your coach should be looking at your natural tendencies as well as any limitations you have to ensure your address position works for you, is repeatable, delivers on the key fundamentals, and ultimately delivers results.
From your own zero point we can then work on manipulating the ball flight and progress your ability to score out on the golf course as well.
Through taking a simple approach to the setup, having triggers which lead to getting it right, and then drilling these every time we practice, we remove a big variable which can limit performance.
Focus on the fundamentals and the next steps become easier.
