Masters champion Sergio Garcia will headline the list of top European players at this year’s British Masters at Close House, September 28-October 1.
Garcia, who won his first major championship in April at Augusta National, will join Ryder Cup teammate and tournament host Lee Westwood for the event having followed in the footsteps of Seve Ballesteros and José María Olazábal as the third Spaniard to win a Green Jacket.
“It’s going to be great,” said Garcia when asked about visiting the North East. “Lee came to play our charity event last year in Switzerland, Sergio and Friends. He made a great effort to come over there right after The Open Championship. He asked me if I would do the same thing for him for the British Masters and I said yes. I’m excited about it. I played the event as an amateur a couple of times and I have good memories. It should be fun.”
Westwood, who has been attached to Close House since 2011, said: “I’ve known Sergio for a long time – since he came out on Tour.
“He is a great addition to the tournament. The response so far from fans has been brilliant and it’s been very well supported with sponsors. The field is shaping up nicely so it will be a great week and I’m really looking forward to it.”
