Habib Khan lifted the Yorkshire Amateur trophy for the first time at Huddersfield Golf Club after three days of excellent golf.
Habib, 21, led the field at his home club with rounds of 68, 65, 72 and 70 giving him a nine under-par total. Defending champion Max Berrisford (Ilkley) finished second – shooting rounds of 67 and 68 on the final day to finish two shots back with a seven under-par total – as George Hanson (Crosland Heath) finished third on six under-par.
“It’s a real privilege to add my name to the Yorkshire Amateur trophy,” said Habib. “When you look at the list of past winners, it’s amazing who’s on there, and to see my name alongside them feels really good.
“Playing at my home club was definitely an advantage, but it also added some pressure. I’ve played a lot of golf at Huddersfield, and in some big events here, so I knew what to expect. My focus all week was concentrating on the next shot, not dwelling on any bad ones, and solid iron play off the tee as you needed to keep the ball in play in the firm conditions. Putting was key as well, and I holed some important ones throughout the four rounds,” added Habib, who made it through the First Stage of DP World Tour Qualifying School at Huddersfield in 2025 and will tee it up in the event again later this summer.
“My 65 on day two was the key. That round put me right up there with a chance to win it and gave me a healthy lead to carry forward. From there, I just focused on not blowing up while trying to go lower and lower; staying on the offensive and making birdies was important.
“Seeing my lead cut from six shots to one on the final day, I knew I had to go out and post a good number in the final round. My start to round four [making birdies on the first, second and third holes] settled me into it perfectly. I got my six-shot lead back and from there I hit solid shots and stayed in control. Despite a couple of bogeys on the back nine, I got the win over the line.”
Habib was cheered on by members of Huddersfield throughout the week, and had his father and sister were there to see him win his first county championship title.
“The support all week was amazing,” he added. “To have my family there on 18 was brilliant, and I can’t thank them enough for all their support. My thanks also go to the members of Huddersfield for hosting us and cheering me on, to PING for all their support with equipment, and to the county officials for their work delivering another great event.”
Following his win, Habib will go on to represent Yorkshire in the Men’s County Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa on September 12-13.
Meanwhile, Charles Wright (Ganton) won The Alvin Trophy as the leading player under the age of 18; and the Halifax, Huddersfield and District Union – represented by Habib and Dylan Shaw-Radford – won the Inter-District Plate, which is presented to the district with the lowest combined score from two players over the first 36 holes.
