The Durham and Yorkshire men’s teams won their third round matches in this season’s Northern Counties Men’s League to both remain undefeated and sit top of the table with five match points.
Durham produced an emphatic 13.5-4.5 win over Cheshire at Brancepeth Castle to sit top of the table with five match points and a superior number of game points after three weekends of matches. Having won the foursomes session 4-2, the hosts dominated the singles with wins for Jamie Birkbeck, Jack Richardson, Wayne Melles, Evan Oliver, Luke Bonser, Grant Dixon, Richard Aisbitt, Kevin Suggett and Martin McCririck plus a half point for James Glenn.
Meanwhile, Yorkshire earned a narrow victory over Northumberland at Arcot Hall. Having led 4.5-1.5 after the morning foursomes, Yorkshire needed to dig deep late in the singles after Jake Sowden won the first match and Habib Khan earned a half point. Wins for Ollie Smith and Josh Bailes were followed by victories in the final two matches for Matt Dolling and Dan Norman as the session ended 6.5-5.5 in Northumberland’s favour but Yorkshire secured the overall victory 10-8.
In the third match of the weekend, Cumbria secured a win over Lancashire at Seascale. Having led 3.5-2.5 after the foursomes, Cumbria produced seven wins and two half points in the final nine singles to win the match 11.5-6.5.
The penultimate round of matches will take place on August 15-16 – with Yorkshire hosting Durham at Crosland Heath, Cumbria hosting Northumberland at Furness, and Lancashire facing Cheshire at Ormskirk.
