Cooper, Naughton and Hirst bring home medals from European Team Championships

Three of the region’s top amateurs helped England bring home medals from the European Team Championships.

Doncaster-based George Cooper was part of the England boys’ team which won silver in Spain, while Charlotte Naughton (Longhirst Club) and Lily Hirst (Huddersfield) were part of the England women’s team which won bronze in Ireland.

Following a packed week across four countries, England’s boys’ and girls’ squads both claimed silver medals – each falling to Spain in the final – while the England women secured a bronze after defeating Finland in their last match.

The boys, who were facing Spain on home soil at Barceló Montecastillo Golf Resort, defeated Italy 5-2 and Netherlands 4.5-2.5 on their way to the final, but couldn’t recover after losing 2-0 in the morning foursomes as they were beaten 5.5-1.5 by the hosts.

The girls, meanwhile, beat Italy 5.5-1.5 and France 5-2 to reach their final. After splitting the morning foursomes in Zurich (Switzerland), Spain secured the final match to win the singles 3-2 and claim the title with a narrow 4-3 win overall.

The women ended their week at PGA National Slieve Russell in Ireland on a high with a 4.5 to 2.5 win over Finland. In the final match Davina Xanh, Sophia Fullbrook and Patience Rhodes their singles ties after Nellie Ong and Lily Hirst earned foursome victory on the first extra hole.

In the men’s event, England beat the Netherlands on the final day in Estonia to finish seventh overall.
