Aaron Scott wins Durham Strokeplay title

Heworth’s Aaron Scott lifted the Durham County Golf Union Strokeplay Championship trophy with a three under-par total at Whickham Golf Club.

With the event shortened to three rounds due to rain, thunderstorms and strong winds, Aaron led from start to finish – posting an opening five under-par round of 66 before following it up with rounds of 74 and 70 for a one-shot win over Boldon’s Gavin Nesbit.

Aaron, 26, set out his stall with his opening 66, which included a back nine of 31. His second round 74 on Sunday morning allowed the chasing pack – including Gavin (72) and Heworth’s James Simpson (68) to close the gap to just one. Aaron then went to the turn in the third and final round in one over-par before showing his mettle with seven pars and birdies at 13 and 16 on the back nine for a round of 70 to complete a one-shot win over Gavin.

“The last day with the wind was really tough,” said Aaron. “The tee shot on the par five 16th in the final round was key, as was the fact I was very comfortable with my irons. I was having a problem with the shanks, but I went back to see my coach Andy Paisley and it’s paid off as I’ve been hitting my irons pretty well since.”
