Take control

Many golfers struggle to control their impact position – the point at which the clubhead strikes the golf ball. Players with this issue can be categorised into two types: shaft leaners – players who push the grip too far ahead of the clubhead at impact causing an open clubface; and shaft flippers – players who leave the grip behind the clubhead at impact causing a closed clubface.

To improve your impact position, try working with an impact bag (or a holdall stuffed with towels). Take your normal stance and – with your lead arm creating a straight, vertical line with the shaft – push the clubhead into the bag. From here set your body into a good impact position. Take this thought and position with you to the range and try to consistently return to this position – delivering the clubface square and ensuring the ball starts off straight to the target.
