Northern Golfer #41 – February/March 2016

The nights are getting lighter – a sign of the imminent arrival of spring amid the wet and windy conditions we have had to endure of late.

Despite a relatively mild winter, golf clubs across the region have had to cope with a variety of weather issues hampering preparations and in many cases closing courses for periods due to waterlogging.

It is at times like this we see the often unsung green staff come into their own to ensure our courses are in the best possible condition.

The season ahead looks like another great one for the region with some great tournaments heading our way. We still don’t get as many events as we deserve, but the support of the PGA and EuroPro Tour in particular is always welcome.

Who knows, perhaps those taking part in the tournament we feature on this month’s cover may go on to play in these events and even follow in the footsteps of their heroes on the European Tour.

In an era where sportsmen and women are often crticised as being remote from fans and the grassroots, it is heartening to see Graeme Storm giving something back to the game he loves and enlisting the support of some of the game’s biggest superstars.

His efforts re-enforce this region’s reputation as one of the most forward-thinking in providing opportunities for youngsters to get into golf – whether it be taster coaching sessions or competitive tournaments – some of which are highlighted in this edition of Northern Golfer.

Elsewhere in the magazine, we launch a new feature highlighting the latest gear on the market as well as checking out what is in the bag of the winners of tournaments worldwide – Danny Willett is the first following his great win in the Dubai Desert Classic – check it out on Page 56.

We also feature the latest news, views and offers, while our course profile and special feature concentrate on our beautiful coastline with plenty opportunities to enjoy golf with great views.

Enjoy, and until the next issue, happy golfing and may your handicaps come down.
