We’ve had some red hot summer days and some complete washouts in the last few weeks, but it doesn’t seem to have unsettled our region’s golfers.
The Open Championship at Royal Portrush was a unanimous highlight of our month at Northern Golfer HQ, particularly when our friend Andrew Wilson made the cut and climbed through the field to finish in a tie for 32nd place on Sunday. To see how far Andrew has come, from winning events like the Northern Masters and scratch competitions in Durham to competing alongside the best players in the world was a lot of fun for the team here. It was also a lot of fun for Andrew, who discusses his first nine months as a professional in this month’s cover interview.
We’ve also caught up with greenkeeper Simon Olver following his trip to Portrush, and he’s got some great stories to share from his week in Northern Ireland.
We’ve also been celebrating Women in Golf Week recently and the girls continue to make the headlines this month – from county championships through to more national success. It’s been inspiring to read the stories from women and girls across the country who play golf as well as those that work and volunteer in the game so we can all enjoy it.
The weather inspired me to write this month’s column all about having the will to play in any conditions – as did a damp afternoon at Garesfield Golf Club for this month’s Course Profile. I’ll be out there rain or shine for the rest of the season and you should be too – the alternatives are not worth thinking about!
The Match Play Pairs tournament is reaching its later stages and we’re down to just 16 teams in this year’s events. There have been some fantastic games so far – good luck to all those still vying for a place in the final at Wynyard Golf Club in October.
We’ve also opened online bookings for the Champion of Champions events this month and there’s only a month to go until we’re back to Ramside Hall for the events, which are supported by Brewin Dolphin for the first time this year. The events are a great finish to the season, celebrating club champions from all our clubs and every club has invites to attend – please make sure your club takes up its places, we’d love to see as many champions as possible taking part this year.
