Richardson takes title for the second time

Yorkshire’s Alan Richardson is England’s champion club captain again.

He claimed the title for the second time at Frilford Heath when he scored 74 points in the 36-hole final.

Richardson, from Scarborough North Cliff, said: “I’m absolutely chuffed, over the moon,” as he picked up the title he first won at Burhill in 2014.

He was three points clear of halfway leader Andy Vernon (Stapleford Park), while Chris Wise (Holtye) and Martin Tate (Blackburn) shared third place with 68 points.

The championship was played as part of England Golf Week, which brings more than 500 competitors to Frilford Heath to take part in a series of finals during the five-day celebration of handicap golf.

Richardson was club captain in 2001 and has been a regular in England Golf Captains tournaments since then – alongside a large number of other Scarborough North Cliff past captains. “When we went to Southport and Ainsdale for the qualifier there were 10 captains from our club,” he said.

“We love it. It’s great value for money, even if you don’t win, and it’s really well organised. The nice thing with these events is that they are very friendly and there’s quite a bit of banter!”

Richardson arrived at the final playing off 11 and, after returning scores of 36 and 38 points, is anticipating that his handicap will be cut to eight, his lowest ever.
